Language Arts
Language arts in the fourth grade include grammar, writing, spelling, vocabulary, and reading. The students learn how the proper use of grammar and mechanics can improve their written and oral communication skills. Through the writing process, the students explore, practice, and refine their writing skills and style. Journals are used to stimulate the imagination and provide practice in a non-threatening environment.
Spelling skills are developed through the use of a text, personal writings, and reading selections. Dictionary fluency is emphasized and refined.
In reading, the students continue to develop understanding and fluency, while learning literal, inferential, and interpretive comprehension skills. Vocabulary is introduced through literature selections. Students read legends, myths, poetry, drama, tall tales, and novels. There is integration with the social studies program through novels like Island of the Blue Dolphins, Zia, and By the Great Horn Spoon. Fourth grade also makes use of Time for Kids magazine to help the development of comprehension, critical reading, and reading for meaning.

Mathematics
Grade four is anchored by the Mathematics Unlimited program which engages students in the mathematics of real life by presenting concepts, skills, and strategies that directly relate to daily living. Fourth graders focus on number-sense development, mental math, and estimation. Students learn operations with decimals and fractions, probability, measurement, geometry, and problem solving strategies.
Science
The fourth grade science program allows the individual student gain knowledge in a wide variety of subject matters. These include weather, where students gain an understanding of what makes weather unique to their own area and discover methods which will help them gather data about various weather factors. The students also learn about other activities both below and above the Earth's surface including earthquakes, mountain building, and volcanoes. Students study some physical science which involves a basic introduction to the laws of motion. Life science is also a focus in fourth grade. Students learn about the relationships that animals and nature share. This includes a study of multiple ecosystems, the food web, water cycle, and biomes.

Social Studies
The history, geography, industry, and development of California are explored through a variety of ways including the texts Oh! California, Whispers from the First Californians, and Whispers along the Mission Trail, videos, research, a visit to a California mission, and participation in the Redlands Heritage Tour. A four-day trip to San Francisco and Sacramento is the highlight of the program. While on this trip, students experience camping, pioneer living, panning for gold, and visit a wide variety of historical places.
The social studies program also includes extensive map studies, current events, work with charts and graphs, analyzing cause/effect, note taking, comparing and contrasting, and understanding, appreciating, and tolerating cultural differences.
